“I used to follow your podcast very sincerely and I loved everything you did. But I’m extremely disappointed with your take on the cancel culture. Yes we all have different opinions and ideologies and there is beauty in this diversity. But enabling powerful, rich and privileged individuals to share harmful and destructive opinions that can actively damage the lives of marginalized people is not “freedom of speech”. By defending their vitriol, we are part of the system that enacts discriminatory laws and regressive policies. If you really think JK Rowling’s personal views have no consequences on the lives of trans people, I’d ask you to reconsider the reality where laws are being enacted in the US referencing her tweets as supporting evidence. And the trans community has not canceled her: they’ve reached out several times to try and explain to her why her viewpoint is damaging and hurtful. When people insist and refuse to engage in dialogue with the people they want to demonize, there is merit in denouncing their words and acts.
I’m very saddened that LGBT members like you remain wishfully myopic in their analysis of the issue. We should always protect those who are most fragile, most underprivileged : otherwise what kind of society are we living in?”
