Reviews
Intriguing premise, excellent research and primary sources, but not very entertaining or engaging

I loved this show! I binged it in 2 days. The best part is defiantly the first hand interviews with those involved, on the flip side the worst part is probably the repetition from the narrator. If you’re looking for a basic podcast that will keep your attention I definitely recomend this.

Don’t get the low reviews. This is easy to listen to and love the actual audio.

The only annoying aspect is the datum sissy prisoner gaurd named Bobby…that man had the courage of a 3 year old boy. All he did was cry

Amazing story. Amazing documentation! Well delivered! Loved this!

Overall, this was a well-enough retelling of the stand-off. It was interesting to hear the recordings and the history surrounding the people involved. However, the narration had, at times, superfluous expression that took away from the documentary. Also, as a South Texas native, I would’ve...Read full review »

As a former correctional officer at TDC now TDCJ; this brought back my time in the Academy and as a CO. Having to sign a waiver as a staff member that if you are taken hostage was a real experience we all had. It was sobering because you saw the footage of the Walls standoff before we signed....Read full review »

Wes’ directing for this was awesome! The combination of the tapes, interviews, and external media was perfectly blended with the storytelling. When the series ended I felt like I wanted more content from this storyline, but I feel like any more would drag on. For a podcast, this series had...Read full review »

This is a 5 star podcast! I am not a paying subscriber and just listened to the entire season for free and mostly ad-free! I see all of these reviews saying they were “trapped” into listening to the first few episodes before realizing they couldn’t listen to the rest of them without a...Read full review »

This is a very good account of the siege in Huntsville. I lived in Dallas at the time, just getting ready to enter high school and it dominated the news. Spent a year in Huntsville (at college) and met two folks with a direct connection to the siege. It’s sad overall. I used to listen to Joe...Read full review »

You have to buy a subscription to listen to the ending. Plenty of other good podcasts out there to listen to another one from imperative media.

Very interesting however… I didn’t look ahead.. disappointed that subscription is required… 🤦🏻‍♀️

Who really shot the hostages but my money is on law enforcement then they covered it up and blamed Caruso. Well told story though
Rudy🤪 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 05/04/22
Put the whole series under the paywall if you’re going to do that. The subscription trap is a bad idea.
Star man 2 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 04/27/22
Starts off well, but to then enjoy the conclusion they want you to pay. Sad

I listened to six episodes and wasn’t able to hear the last 5 because a subscription was required - never had that happen on a podcast before and I don’t like it

I guess I should have looked ahead but right when I was really getting into it I couldn’t listen to any more because I needed to subscribe! Commercials aren’t enough??? So stupid! Definitely would have been 5 stars if it wasn’t for that.

I was in high school when this happened. He was well known around McDonna not far from where I grew up. It’s still a rough area.

Don’t waste your time listening if you’re not a paying member. At episode 6 it stopped free listening even though I was on day 2 since starting. They try to get you interested and then take advantage. You already had to listen to commercials. The makers of this made a good podcast… to bad they...Read full review »

The recordings from the prison system’s archives are unlike anything I’ve heard in a podcast. I also loved how the narrator gave the historical & family context of the people affected, and didn’t focus on just the grim true crime aspects.

The story is a good story or it seems like it will be but the episodes are filled with too much random detail and I love details but it takes away from the story line when it is just little details or whatever and they just seem like time fillers to make the podcast longer. The audio is terrible...Read full review »

Wes Ferguson has done a great job digging up the details of the Huntsville prison hostage and standoff situation. Fred Carrasco is a compelling character, an anti-hero who suggests a need for fuller understanding. The fact that the Watergate news broke in the midst of this situation makes it feel...Read full review »

This is an interesting story but the sound engineering is awful. I tried to listen to this in my brand new truck and could not make out the audio on much of it. I enjoyed getting the in-depth reporting of the 1974 Huntsville Penitentiary siege. What a saga of human emotion, from heroism to desperation, ending in tragedy. You'd have to be jaded not to be fascinated by this podcast. I binged the whole thing. Excellent work!Read full review »

This kind of prison riot this the kind of thing I’d imagine happening in the 1920s, not in the midst of Watergate. You mentioned in the first episode that it was rumored that the lights were dim when the old Sparky would be electrocuting someone. My uncle attended Sam Houston in the very early 50s. I don’t think anyone should blame the kids or the family for what they say about their dad. No matter what, he was a good person to them. Outside of a portion of Texas, this incredible story has generally faded into history, except now a journalist has brought it back to light. A thorough and insightful look into an antihero legend to some, a villain to others, and a surreal showdown in a Texas prison.

I hope the daughter of this dude Fred should never glow about how much money her dad supposedly had. Heroin has ruined and killed so many. It’s destroyed my life as well.
