Learning to cook from everybody’s dream mom
Sorry real mom, but soggy tomato sandwiches and canned ravioli just won’t cut it anymore. I stumbled across Start Cooking while snooping around for a quiche recipe – I’d never made one before but I was having some friends over for brunch and didn’t want to fuss with over-easying instead of visiting. I expected just another text recipe, but instead found this lovely, personable site with fun animated videos of cooking tips from the mom everyone always wanted to have (or be). I was skeptical about watching a video on such a simple recipe, but I learned a lot of extra tips from this one and several of the others I’ve checked out so far. (How come I never thought to de-juice the tomatoes for my seven-layer dip?) I also adore the artful way all that chopping and prep work happens; if only I could accomplish that half as neatly (or quickly). Lots of smart little hints here. Kudos to Kathy Maister for creating a wonderful resource that’s clear, simple, and fun to watch. All the lovely little details like a great soundtrack/sound effects and the flashy star bursts on the knives in the equipment list at the end of each video makes this site both informative and a lot of fun. The general kitchen tips in the blog section are well worth checking out too. All that’s missing is a few more options for vegetarians. Kathy, you’ve put my mom’s out-of-the-packet mac and cheese to shame with your evaporated milk and dry mustard rendition – if you can show me how to master miso and buckwheat noodles this simply, I’ll be filing my adoption papers in the morning.Read full review »

A collection of great, easy-to-follow recipes. Plenty of them, and they're especially good for beginners). And they're delivered in style: The stop-motion photo feel works better than video somehow -- compulsively watchable as well as helpful. A real treat.Read full review »
