Do not be fooled by the description. Two episodes are dedicated to an interesting subject. What remains is the podcaster milking the weakest of his own family’s drama.

So I just stumbled up on this and for three days now, I’ve had all these, as NPR puts it, “driveway moments”. I don’t think I have enjoyed a podcast more in such a long time. How the author juxtaposed his life experience along with this mercurial figure was brilliant storytelling! Bravo!

Who would have guessed that this would be such a really good story?!?!!! This was fantastic!!! Couldn’t stop listening. Sat in the car long after arriving places just to hear more! There was NO WAY to guess upcoming content! Maybe I can find more podcasts by Eric. I feel like I know him as a...Read full review »

This is the first time I’m writing a review—I really felt compelled to now that I’ve finished the podcast. What a beautiful story, particularly appreciated the emphasis on the choices we have to nurture the relationships around us. Being alive and a good person to those we love is more complex...Read full review »

Thank you, Eric Mennel. What an amazing piece of work.

Podcast had everything until .. it didn’t. Am I still listening to the same one? Or did I accidentally start another? It has started to turn down into a major retrospective of the narrators life and well.. feels like a bit of bait and switch to be honest. Doubt I will listen to the end even...Read full review »

I LOVED this podcast. Reminds me a bit of Also A Poet by Ada Calhoun. A story within a story. Thank you for telling yours, and his.

I didn’t want this podcast to end! This podcast was brilliant. Thanks especially to your family for showing up so honestly and vulnerably.

Binged this series, thoroughly enjoyed the love, depth and diligence with which they were created.

Incredibly interesting. I only wish it was longer. You did a wonderful job telling these 2 intertwined stories. Please do more podcasts, your voice and tempo was excellent. Thank you to everyone who opened up and shared with you. This was a beautiful listen!

This is the only review I’ve ever taken the time to write despite listening to a lot of podcasts. It is well told and more than what I expected, two I bromate stories intertwined. I finished it in a day and a half.

A mystery about a man with an interesting past devolves into informal family therapy of the podcaster. I empathize with the family struggles, but it is presented in an entirely uninsightful way. Getting rid of their elder family dog after he lived his whole life with them makes them look like a...Read full review »

Such a beautiful job! I never write reviews, however, how you tell this story evoked so much emotion!! Thank you!!!

I'm currently on part 4 of this podcast and I downloaded this app though I don't use it, just so I could leave a review. Something about the way that Eric tells this story....it's so evocative and invites compassion. I want to meet many of the people that he interviews - they're...Read full review »

This story was fascinating and beautifully told. Thank you for you (and your family’s) vulnerability. The exploration of family dynamics and the wounds they cause that can haunt us was so human and touching! Beautifully done.

This podcast started off so strong and then quickly went downhill as the host focused on his family and left the story of Matthew behind.

Loved this! Eric’s telling of this man’s story and that of his own family is honest, heartfelt and compelling.

Really was excited about this podcast hoping it would be like S-Town, boy was I wrong. The premise was intriguing and the first couple eps are interesting, however it stops there. I feel like the host realized it was a dead end midway through and shifted to his own family drama (which wasn’t...Read full review »

The premise of the podcast is interesting. We start off trying to learn about a mysterious person but only scratch the surface of Matthew, his life, and family to make room for the creator’s own story. While the narrator’s own familial conflict is somewhat interesting, this really feels like an...Read full review »

This podcast goes so much deeper than your average true crime. Bringing the host and listener back to their own life, choices and future. Loved it.

The show starts out with a compelling story and mystery, fizzles into a pretty standard picture of an abusive narcissist and a shoehorned, fairly bloated parallel story about the narrator’s also very standard family drama. I think at some point in the research the creator realized the story of...Read full review »

Listened, enjoyed, and even bristled at some of the bad reviews I saw on here until the host revealed that, upon a divorce, the family abandoned their family dog - and elderly German shepherd- at a pound. He states, “I knew the dog was going to die” implying they had left him in the care of a...Read full review »

Loved this podcast. The story. The pursuit. The honesty. The tribulations. Eric investigates himself and his family right alongside Dorr Watkins. The path traveled made the story complete.

This podcast starts with an interesting premise but gets side-tracked by what I feel is a common trend among— for lack of a better term—millennial podcasters. They tend to turn everything into a self-reflecting self-righteous narrative. I tend to enjoy storytellers who can just tell the story...Read full review »

the first 3-4 episodes are truly good and compelling and then the show literally stops talking about Matthew Magill so the host can spend the last 3 episodes whining about how his parents got divorced and why it makes him sad

Beautiful podcast. Spoilers ahead. I loved how the story, ostensibly about Matthew, wasn’t at all, but rather about family and legacy and loneliness and what we do to earn people. I loved that after all the times Matthew used people as mere devices in his own story of which he was the star,...Read full review »

I was done by episode 3 where already he’s shown to be narcissistic and abusive the subject a 39 year old man begins dating a 17 girl who’s parents are younger than he is. Haven’t we had enough putting creeps like this on a pedestal? No thanks.

This podcast is a fascinating look at the wild life of Matthew MaGill, who was charismatic but left a trail of hurt behind him. At first I was drawn in, who is this guy? Hey I’m from South Florida, I now live in Georgia, this is a very relatable story for me. I really tried. But the host’s glottal fry (popularly called “vocal” fry) is just too maddening to listen to, and I had to give it up and unsubscribe from what seems to be a fascinating story. And it would be so easy for him to correct this. But, this is a podcast, not written journalism, and...Read full review »

I’m on episode 5, “Sister, Brother”. The journey from uncovering the secrets of a complete stranger to unraveling the mysteries within his (Eric’s) own family is fascinating. How lovely that he and his siblings were able to have this experience. Amazing storytelling from the heart.

I have never felt so close to someone as I do to Eric right now. I think my family was duplicated and I can feel the emotions. My heart is so heavy right now and I applaud this family for the steps they take to repair their relationships at the end. Excellent podcast!

If you’re listening to this for a “true crime” story, you will be disappointed. If you’re open to an expansive story about the nature of humanity, memory and family (including the host’s own), I encourage you to listen.

I wanted to like this. But the constant pity party being thrown by the narrator for himself along, with his obvious resentment, bitterness, and jealousy, directed at people who are well off, made this one of the worst podcasts I’ve ever heard. I have given this 4 stars and recommend it as worth a listen. However, the digression into the narrator’s personal life - while clearly setting a context for understanding the imperfect nature of families and therefore a parallel to the main protagonist - was perhaps overdone.
