Their analysis of movies is so informative and I learned something new with every podcast. I like that they have themes for the season that they’re looking at and their disagreements are entertaining.

Love the analyses the presenters give. Lots of theory. Lots of way to learn how to improve writing. Seeing writing from a feminist view too!

I have studied story structure with Valerie and I credit her with getting me on track with my memoir. Each week, she and Melanie add to my knowledge in an entertaining way. The way they dissect films is quite impressive.

Every week these two present a detailed analysis of a story, and provide information and enlightenment any writer can benefit from. Plus they are very friendly and charming hosts.

For anyone (like me) who has been overwhelmed by story theory, this is the resource for you! The presenters clearly explain the principles, and their application of the theory is both interesting and user-friendly. Melanie and Valerie’s insights are thought-provoking and useful. I’m a story nerd and I love this podcast even more than the Story Grid podcast! I appreciate the way the hosts’ minds work and how they take a detailed approach to analysing the structure of the films, while focusing in on an element of storytelling. I even got my teenage daughter interested by...Read full review »

Valerie and Melanie talk about story and story structure in a way I have never heard in any other podcast. I’ve read and heard a ton of writing advice about character, plot, setting, etc., but these two hosts bring a degree of analysis and insight into what makes story work (or not) that truly...Read full review »

I love this podcast. They are a great combo. Both share interesting new insights about books and movies. They constantly reference the analytical parts of story creating which I like as this is a good reminder for my own work. My favorite podcast on story writing and analysis is this.

Sharp analysis of movies with the idea of studying the foundations—and some of the nuts and bolts—of storytelling. Each presenter focuses on one key aspect of storytelling over a period of weeks, one movie a week. They know their stuff, and the commentary is crystal clear. As Thoreau wrote,...Read full review »

It really picks up after season 1, with each season taking an in-depth look at unique aspects of the craft. I’m really looking...Read full review »

This is my go to writing podcast at present. My love for movies and novels combine with educational tidbits about writing? Perfect. Sometimes the podcasters reference the theories they both subscribe to in a salesy way. That I don’t love. But everything else is very valuable for novelists and...Read full review »

I’m a story nerd myself, so just the name of the podcast sold me. I appreciate the story breakdowns for the movies that are covered each episode, and within each episode I will hear one or two good points that I can take away and consider when writing a story or editing someone else’s. However,...Read full review »

This is one of those podcasts I immediately move to the top of my queue whenever a new episode is released. The hosts are brilliant, engaging, and give me so much to think about regarding story, plot, and characters.

Did season 1 make me question whether I have good taste in movies? Yes. This is a super informative podcast. It’s made me think harder about my own writing. I appreciate that the hosts always remind me (and all listeners) that these tools aren’t to make us write less, but more because sometimes...Read full review »

Well-produced, insightful, perfect tracking with Story Grid terminology, and fun. I’ve listened to different versions of SG podcasts in the last three years, and this is the easiest to listen to. Thanks for a great job!

I loved this summary episode of Story Nerd and I’m looking forward to the next season. Great idea to teach story methods using very relatable examples from movies.

This is random, but I wanted to mention it lol. In Turning Red, Mei doesn’t actually get her period at any point in the movie. Her mother *assumes* she got her period, which is why she brings her pads, but she actually hasn’t. The panda works as a metaphor for cultural heritage: the traits that...Read full review »
