This podcast left so much to be desired. The flow of it is good and the way the narrator leads you on had me wanting more, but when that more never came I was disappointed. It starts out as a story of mystery and suspense and ends up being a biography about a sad repressed man who’s life story...Read full review »

This is my FAVORITE show ever! I’ve listened so many times, it’s such a well produced show. It was the first show I had listened to as a podcast and I was hooked ever since. Love this story ❤️

Interesting people, interspersed town, and interesting things happen. The “main character “ in this podcast just may have been a 1:billion mind; but he also is upset with life and it leads him down a dark path of strange choices on a short dark path.

The only thing I don’t like about this podcast is that I’ll never be able to experience it for the first time again. Truly a wild ride from start to finish!

It’s thrilling, heart wrenching, and unique. You think it’s about one thing and it turns into something completely different.

What a character... the genuine article. Uniquely eccencentric, as geniuses often are... especially when mixed with treacherous mental health. A double Whammy... smart enough to calculate the desperate ramifications of human folly and powerless to not feel the anguish of them. A story well...Read full review »

I listen to this about once a year now. It’s totally engrossing, and this will be the best writing and storytelling Brian Reed ever does, because it’s not reporting, it’s like... confessing what happened to you after a traumatic and life-changing event. It’s like Brian trying to make sense of all...Read full review »

Amazing! I lost interest after the first episode, I thought it wasn’t what I was looking for. After a couple weeks and reading so many awesome reviews I decided to give it another shot. Holy moly I’m glad I did. What a story. And the yankee host completely out of his element puts this together so...Read full review »

Wonderfully done BUT please consider a trigger warning for suicide. It hits some people very hard and pulls them into a place they don’t feel like they can get out of.

Is this fan fiction for “A Confederacy of Dunces”? I loved this podcast, and found beautiful analogies between John B and Ignacious J. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I feel so moved by this entire series. The way that these complex characters are revealed. These real people. Thank you for sharing this piece of humanity. Absolutely inspired by this thoughtful & carefully constructed storytelling. And, of course, in awe of John B.

Months after finishing this series, I continue to think about the enigma of John B. The reporting is excellent, the narration is well done... probably the best series I’ve ever listened to.

This podcast takes you through all the emotions. I was brought to this podcast because I was intrigued by the murder that John B brought Brian there for, but ended up finding so much more. It’s amazing how the essence of someone is in everything you see or do ❤️

This podcast has ruined all other podcasts for me in the best way possible - nothing measures up. It is a story that has stayed with me and I cannot stress how beautiful the storytelling in this podcast is. What a raw, real look at humans and their stories.

Really enjoyed the story telling and all the characters of the town
chesee353 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 02/09/20
Beautifully produced and written, utterly absorbing. The story of these human lives in this small rural community keeps opening and opening until it is as big as the world.

I could not stop listening to the story of John. This podcast wove together each episode into a story with a twist or turn here, but put together so beautifully. By the end you feel like you know the people personally.

Loved everything about this podcast. The story is so weird but it has such a perverse charm to it. Like a dog so ugly it’s cute. Commit to this one and ride the wave!!!

So interesting and emotional. A bit long but worth all the details and twists. Highly recommend!

One of the worst I’ve ever listened to. I don’t know how so many people love it. It’s just a very long character study on a sad man. Anti-climatic
torinurse via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 02/01/20
Enrapturing, colorful and absolutely unforgettable. I’ve listened to hundreds of podcasts and this is my forever favorite. I still think of John on occasion - what a fascinating and enigmatic human being.
