Dude, well done...
In a genre full of mediocre, self-important, and morbidly unfunny (though some try to be) podcasts with varying degrees of production skill and equipment, this is one of the handful that does not make you want to throw your phone/tablet/MacBook/whatever through the nearest window after an episode or two. I'm not sure if the host has any actual on air experience, listening to the first couple episodes, I would guess not. There are a couple of things the host does that me suspect he is not as experienced as some of the more established (but often quite bad to mediocre) podcasts. This is not a bad thing, sure the "popped" "p's" and "b's" are noticeable (at least they are to me), but so is the rudimentary inquisitiveness of the host. In the first episode, he states a fact that is lost on many in contemporary society, that is, mental health is oft cut, neglected, and otherwise marginalized. This is to all of our detriment, and the host contextualizes the problem in a simple, yet proper and effective way (a way that a lot of the "all too cool/funny/smart other true crime podcasts do not"). That is he makes a statement about mental health, contextualizes it with a story which focuses the listener, then illuminate this original statement with the words "here is a specialist in...." which is music to my ears. It's writing 101, but oh so often forgotten in many of the sheikh, more highly funded, and popular podcasts in this and other genres. I have only listened to a couple of the episodes thus far, but the content is well written, very well executed, and is given ambience by the well chosen but not over-done sound effects. The editing is great, the execution is as good as many AM talk shows on air these days, and the content is well chosen, focused and surprisingly un-repetitive. Many, many, (many), oh-so many media items in the true crime genre are done repetitively with little variation based on books usually written in order to take advantage of a sensational case in the news presently. This leads to incomplete overviews of crimes being reproduced in to increasingly more sensational media, all the while missing the forest for the trees (or the forest altogether). This ends in a bunch of ID shows with the wrong (or at least questionable) conclusions which are simplistic and frankly lazy. Well done, keep it up!Read full review »

Sword & Scale is a great go-to podcast for long walks and car trips. The stories are always interesting, well researched and well produced. If you’re into True Crime lit or just have a morbid curiosity about why some people do terrible things, you’ll probably enjoy the hell out of this.
