Not Everyone Needs to Have a Podcast
Listen, I would follow Dave Chen to the ends of the earth and I consider his involvement in any project a major marker of quality. However, I’m sad to say that this is the rare exception. Sam Fragoso seems like a very intelligent, thoughtful young man, but not everyone needs to or should have their own podcast. The overly placid, monotone ungainliness of these interviews is a better cure for my insomnia than a handy and a Tylenol PM. I can’t tell if Sam is putting on a patented “public radio” voice or if that’s simply his normal manner of speaking, but someone needs to get Mr. Fragoso a very dark coffee, in any case. The unstructured, conversational, “go wherever” interview has come into vogue recently, and while I think that this method works well for Sam in print, the results here are less than stellar. He’s got some impressive guests, the shows are well-produced and supported by people I respect, and the artwork used for individual episodes is always really cool—I just wish all of this came with a different host.

The tangents his guests go on show us they're more than just celebrities and public figures, they're human. Sam gives them a safe space, asks them insightful questions, and...Read full review »

I’m enjoying these longform interviews. I’m going through all of them slowly and letting them sink in. Like listening in on a third line of a phone conversation, and feeling welcomed. Something good to find, in January 2021. Thank you, Sam and team. May we all talk easy to each other.
