Off to a great start, missing a bit of the BOL chemistry
Tom Merritt is what I consider to be one of the best, if not the best of the best tech news journalists today and has a mastery of the "30 min daily show" format down like nobodies business. Intelligent, sincere, witty, fun without being aloof, corny, or droll are characteristics anyone in this business, not to mention any journalist in any medium would love to have and their presence in Tom is both natural and humbling. If it sounds like I'm talking Tom up, I'm not - see for yourself. TnT podcast is the icing on the Laporte Twit network cake and falls into a programming niche that rounds out the remarkable Twit network in a way that makes me slap myself on the head in a "I can't believe this was missing for so long!" way. I have the benefit of working in an environment that allows me to listen to 5-9 hours of podcasts 7 days a week and can say that TnT's only competition is the legacy Tom helped build at Cnet's Buzz Out Loud (Molly Wood now partnered with the very competent Rafe Needleman). My only negatives would be that I feel like sometimes, perhaps trying to keep the show tight and timely, Tom forgoes opportunities after some news stories that literally beg for a moment of his insight or further illumination and (sans-segway, gasp!) jumps to the next story. That I might be able to get over, what's slightly trickier for me is that Becky Worley's network news background sometimes feels like an awkward fit for the hipper, younger, techier world of podcasts. Don't get me wrong, I think she's an excellent journalist in her own regard, but things that make for interesting segments on GMA don't always make for solid podcasting (i.e. 1.] I feel like we've heard a half dozen times that "her sources at XYZ can neither confirm nor deny" that BFD is to be released next week - seriously, that's not a source if they don't have anything to offer and more importantly that seems to be a harbinger for a pointless comment, 2.] I shuddered in fear for what might become of the podcast when the laser hair removal gadget was tried out on Tom's arm and was to be the "first in a series," 3.] I almost feel like it should be called the TnT-GMA show because I get to hear about so many upcoming or past segments on GMA, 4.] Minor point but I feel like Becky's microphone just stinks and picks up a lot of breathing and background noise that is sort of distracting). Hopefully my gripes aren't taken out of proportion, I probably still just miss "the old show." TnT is off to a wonderful start for being just a couple weeks old, and I am really excited to be able to "have been there" since the first episode and look forward to listening until the last episode (hopefully a long, long way away).Read full review »

Tom is a great tech host and doesn't constantly interrupt his guests the way Leo does. A fresh and informative showRead full review »

Tom is the greatest! Following him from BOL. The show is a great tech news roundup with just enough detail.

I noticed that TWiT TV has tons of podcasts, and as far as I could seen they had video versions of each of them. Now, I will admit that Tom is a nice enough looking guy (and I hope he keeps the facial hair) but I primarily like video versions because I can see what they're talking about.Read full review »
