Good potential if hosts put in a bit more work.
I really want to like this podcast because of its stated premise but there are a few issues that really turn me off. 1. The hosts do quite a bit of kink shaming (Beauty and the Beast and Kill Bill). Are the hosts second wave feminists? Because they sure don't seem sex-positive. 2. The hosts do quite a bit of nerd shaming (Star Wars, the Matrix, Mad Max: Fury Road). They spotlight steam-punks as particularly worthy of ridicule. Sidenote: Steam-punk is a descendent of Cyber-punk which was a powerful critique of late-stage capitalism and the conventions of older science fiction which did not have anything to say about social issues. Cyber-punk was a vicious attack on corporatism and Mad Max: Fury Road is more correctly categorized as Diesel-punk which has become host to critiques of fossil-fuel dependence, colonialism, toxic-masculinity and climate change denialism. A little bit of research may have lead to a more thorough discussion than the one the hosts ultimately put forward. The war-boys are doing chrome whip-it's by the way, it's part of that whole machine cult they're in. I think the stated premise of the pod-cast can lead to some really interesting conversations if the hosts could abandon their second-wave feminist PoV and stop shaming people. I'm going to keep listening for the next few episodes to see if the hosts can grow into the discourse space the Bechdel test provides them.Read full review »

Me: You should listen to this. It is funny and thoughtful. Other female who is named M. Street: Ok. Five nipples. It is so valuable to discuss how what movies present to the world and what they imply about cultural values and how society views people.

I love the hosts' take on the films, but I wish they would have a reccomendation section with both older films and films in theaters. I was pretty upset when "Annihilation" came and went without a mention, even though it CRUSHED the Bechdel Test. We are all tuning in to learn and...Read full review »
