Big Dig
As an Ironworker whose brothers and Sisters worked on or on the Buildings around the Big Dig ; this project was a career! Not only the Dig provided jobs for construction but it made a whole economic engine for Boston’s economy for restaurants, market stores and creation of future building opportunities fuelling investments! Often the blame for its delay has been put on the workers for the Project. I would say that it’s delay was more a motive and devise of the State and Local Leaders; who saw that “ the longer THE DIG stayed more money was spent within the city of Boston which provided more then just construction jobs too! Yes this was economic boom for the economy but obviously there are the negative issues that are being told : that “ the innovated system “ was already inefficient basically too small and just put traffic above to traffic below. That City Government used the permitting process to slow the Construction down to keep their spending economy within the City markets. Finally the delay of the BIG DIG had dramatic effect on the MBTA .There was future plans of a hope of a direct connection between South Station and North Station like a Silver line connection with the Airport. This never happened and the Silver Line’s delay was the catalyst that finally ceased expenditure by the Federal Government on the Big Dig . Sending the Silver Lines costs to the State of Massachusetts and the the State’s government legislature in their wisdom giving the billions of debt to the MBTA for payment via their subsidised ridership! I believe the BIG DIG had a more beneficial effect for Massachusetts but I am a little compromised. I hope this podcast continues so that the everyday Citizen can understand how much planning and fore thought it takes to initiate any change regardless of its effectiveness and City changing of ordinary lives !

ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS THAT THERE WAS NO FOLLOWUP ON THE GREEN LINE EXTENSION RAIL GAUGE ISSUE. Basically killed the podcast that was well produced.

The first two episodes of this podcast were emotional for me. This was our time, my youth and my parents middle age. While Ian grew up with the actual project, I grew up during the battle of the highways and the push me pull you of Massachusetts government. It was, in so many ways, wicked. My...Read full review »

Excellent reporting of a complex story, presented in a digestible, radio-friendly form. I gained a much deeper understanding of this project and the challenges (and benefits) around big infrastructure projects.
