“The first two episodes of this podcast were emotional for me. This was our time, my youth and my parents middle age. While Ian grew up with the actual project, I grew up during the battle of the highways and the push me pull you of Massachusetts government. It was, in so many ways, wicked.
My mother was a hard core anti- highway activist. My father was a radio guy. We all were a little in love with Michael Dukakis. My mother would’ve been so excited, as was I, to hear his voice.
As we all age, many stories take on the shine of the light held by certain politicians, and increasingly, the strobe lights of media. That is why it is so important to hear the voices of the people who were actually there making decisions and policy along with those who were directly impacted.
This was a weird time to be a kid- those immediately post baby boomer kids like me. When I hear people talk about what is my history it is often unrecognizable, distilled or simply chopped into sound bites.
I can already tell that Ian has been looking under rocks and inside hidden oil drums for the story. It is a part of Boston’s history that is important to understand if, as Ian points out, we are going to be able to withstand the needs of the future.”
