2020 Bill is a pastiche of 2007 Bill
I’ve been following Bill since before he started Grantland. I watched him impressively navigate a hyper competitive industry, and build his current empire. I don’t even mind the politics talk lately, because everybody’s always talking about politics (sadly). I don’t think he’s especially intelligent or compelling and I’d prefer he leave it to better suited minds. Most importantly, his basketball and sports content has largely dried up in my eyes. To some extent, what’s happened to Bill is natural: he was a new huge voice in sports 15 years ago. But the media ecosystem has evolved, and Bill is busy, and the cultural stream has become more intelligent and in part had assimilated his style and just kind of passed him by. The degree to which Boston “comes up” in NBA talk and LeBron is constantly bashed (often somewhat subtly, but nearly always negative) while Durant is so often bought up and complimented is clearly biased. The way people consider Durant both within culture and as a basketball player is highly incongruous to Bill’s slanted take. He has a very vested interest in breaking LeBron down for Durant which I find hurts his own credibility. For the record, I am not the biggest LeBron fan either. I respect what Bill has done for sports culture, I respect him as a businessman, as an administrator, and he’s a visionary, but as a talking head he’s just not that interesting anymore. He peaked years ago. He’s obviously spread too thin. The Book of Basketball is still a great book, and Bill has had a hell of a career. But Larry bird, Boogie Nights, Goodwill Hunting, Pearl Jam, Friends, etc, so much of the content Bill uses as a reference repetitively is outdated mainstream white culture from 15 to 25 years ago. And he’s to deeply biased, I find him far less enjoyable.

More reviews of The Bill Simmons Podcast
After a boring 5 months I now have the best podcast host ever to keep me company during my long flights every week. Cousin Sal could do his own impersonation of bill podcast. That would be an interesting hour!
