“Bill Simmons used to be your virtual buddy. He was an opinionated Boston bartender with his own platform. His basic schtick has remained suprisingly consistent and he has become less and less that person.
The Simmons of today is a Sothern California based media CEO. Yet, he resolutely refuses to really understand, or embrace, his new hometown. As a result, he has become the least favorite guy at every sporting event: the Rich Guy rooting for the visiting team. It makes his sports takes increasingly terrible.
Major sports stories can happen minutes from his office and Simmons has no relevant takes. The Dodgers two runs to the World Series are non-events. The Lakers building a team that could attract LeBron was missed. The amazing ability of the Rams to sell out a huge stadium in a couple hours after a game is moved from Mexico City is not within his ability to analyze.
His saving grace as a podcaster is that he barely does sports anymore. Simmons has cultivated a large network across the media landscape and become pretty good interviewer. Simmons gets great guests and gets interesting things out of them. When he has Chuck Klosterman, Malcolm Gladwell, Larry Wilmore, and other smart people on, it is must listen.”
