An impressive distillation revealing Szilard
As a physics student in the early 1980s, I remember the fascination of nuclear physics and its varied applications. Being a science degree, the teaching was understandably heavy on the technicalities & maths but light on the politics & personalities. A few years later I read Richard Rhodes' excellent but weighty tome "The Making of the Atomic Bomb". It diligently covers all the angles through its 800 pages - in particular the politics and personalities. And early on it introduces the critical role played by Leo Szilard - whom I was surprised to be unaware of. This excellent podcast is an insightful bridge across these two deep extremes. It tightly distils an often bafflingly complex story into something much more accessible, while neatly dramatising key events in a personal way via narration by the granddaughter of a wartime bomb materials scientist. And it pleasingly puts a bright spotlight upon Szilard, without whom history would have been very different. Very enjoyable and highly recommended.Read full review »
