Long-running podcast featuring the erudite and charismatic Lazlo Montgomery. I appreciate his coverage of less mainstream topics. I especially enjoyed his podcasts on different overseas Chinese communities such as the Hakka, Hokkien, and the Teochew (of which my maternal grandfather was one)....Read full review »

The China History Podcast is profound, balanced and, for the depth of its content, remarkably accessible and entertaining. Lazlo Montgomery has an uncommon empathy for and insight into China. I am a foreigner who has lived in China for 38 years, speaks Chinese and travels widely. I have learned...Read full review »

Should probably improve the Mandarin pronunciation if you are doing a Chinese history podcast. The cat episode is cute but the poem reciting was a pain to listen to.

I’m really enjoying these. I like the older history and am not particularly interested in anything post Ming. You could benefit from a few more pauses… you give us a lot of information and move on very quickly and I often have to rewind again and again. Excellent work!

Lazlo simply has more substance and is often more engaging as a narrator than the meagre audiobooks on offer in audible.com. I listen to both, but often times he has covered the subject in more depth than what I can find elsewhere. A free public service of the Montgomery foundation indeed!

I think this is the best podcast for China History. Christ stewart one is also good, but I think this podcast has more details on special topics.

This podcast has brought me joy, anger, tears, pride, wisdom, laughter and enlightenment about the Asian continental biomass known as the ‘Chinese’. Thank you.

I searched through the whole Apple podcast database for a objective and informative Chinese history podcast and this was by far the best. I cannot trust any scholars who claim to understand the history and culture without even learning the language and living there for a time period, it is nearly...Read full review »

Listening to my first podcast from this show about Lazlo’s “hero” Robert Hart. Who was NOT born in Lisburn. And besIdes, Lisburn is NOT in County Armagh. This isn’t even research it’s basic geography. I will continue and I am open to change but this is embarrassing quite frankly. He was born in...Read full review »

The podcasts are absolutely brilliant but what makes them that way is Lazlo Montgomery. He presents in such an engaging, downy to earth and relatable style. He has literally made me interested in a topic that I otherwise wanted that interested. Brilliant podcasts and thanks so much for doing these.

I’m an overseas Chinese and this podcast has always helped me feel closer to home with a great range of well-presented topics. Love the narrating style - a great combo of dry humour, sympathy, and objectivity! Have listened for 10 years now.

This podcast helped me through my Chinese studies degree. Every day I walked 40 mins to University. I’d pick episodes that suited the lecture I was about to go listen to, or fit well with an essay I was about to write. It really helped. Love the guys name and his seamless transition back-and-forth from clear English diction to Chinese pronunciations still very hard for me to keep the Chinese names straight myself being a native English speaker but an amazing podcast!

History is linear. So should you... you jump back and forth in time too much. Even in the same paragraph. It does no good to talk about 20th century events if you haven’t talked about what caused them or lead to them in the century/centuries before. Stop referring to the early “survey” episodes...Read full review »

I’m an English teacher living in China. Though I love history, I had never studied Chinese history before moving here. When I came, I read a Chinese history book from Amazon. It was brutally boring. Laszlo has a plethora of knowledge of not only China history, but History of it self. He has stories on top of stories in his CHPs that teaches and insights interest you on the specific topics of history. He is an excellent story teller and sarcastic enough to make you laugh as you listen to him.

Realizing I knew much too little about China, despite being a Classicist and a student of both ancient and modern history, I was lucky enough to stumble upon the China History Podcast. It’s like taking a college course in my kitchen! Not only very informative, but a pure delight as well. Thank you!

I’m still at < 10 episodes, the ones when this podcast was at its incipience. Informative, but my problem is that host seems to be unsettlingly inclined to his worldview, which consequently might sway the listener to a less objective view, unless objectivity is not your goal.

Laszlo has a great laconic style, and no stiltedness in his podcasts. He is obviously an enthusiastic sinophile. Great listening for those wanting to know more about China. Covers many topics which are slightly offbeat and are not in the mainstream history books! Highly recommended!
