More harm than good
My heart breaks for Shelli’s family. In addition to having to go through the tragedy of losing a child and having the crime go unsolved, this damaging podcast was produced for all to hear. The way Kim Barker spoke to the people she interviewed was appalling, particularly the two witnesses who she works to discredit. With so much of the podcast planting seeds that there was a cover-up, that she uses that same evidence in cruel gotcha moments that are alarming and unnecessarily embarrasses Shelli’s roommate and the other witness to the fire. And yet, she does nothing to push back on the prime suspect’s fabrications of the truth. She assigns the family “homework”. Get out of here. We learn very little about Shelli and far too much about the suspect. Finally, the voice affect. Kim Barker speaks with a normal tone and cadence when interviewing. However, she completely manufacturers a monotone narrating style that is excruciatingly difficult to listen to. These are just a few problematic aspects of this podcast which does more harm than help. I do not recommend listening to it and strongly urge Kim Barker to reassess producing any future podcasts.

I can’t get through the first 10 minutes. The narrators audio interview voice would keep me interested as it sounds natural. The success of the podcast is the story and the voice presenting it. Unfortunately, I won’t be hearing the story.
