What has happened to the art of being succinct?
The hosts, topics, content and guests on the podcasts to date on Curbsiders Teach deserve a 5 but what the heck has happened to the thing we try and teach our students, residents and faculty--the art of being succinct?! Nearly 90 minutes on feedback! Too long! [that's feedback, btw :-)] Just because a podcast CAN be as long as you want it to be doesn't mean that you should make it that long. This, in my opinion, is the fatal flaw of many podcasts--including the Curbsiders which I don't listen to very often, as good as the content is, for this reason. I listen to a lot of podcasts--both medical and non--and there is often an apparent inability to reign it in. Think about The Daily, from the NY Times, in which they take these incredibly complicated news stories and are able to interview a reporter and tuck it into an informative/often enlightening (approximately) 30 minute show. Or check out Symptom to Diagnosis--one of the best medical podcasts out there--and those 2 are able to create content that covers symptoms worthy of textbooks that are covered in 30-35 minutes. Honestly, I believe that is the limit of most human beings to stay focused and interested. Anyway, I have not been succinct in this review but let me finish by paraphrasing Dr. Dhaliwal, one of this podcasts guests in an early episode--you can always be late, but you can't go late [in reference to rounding and I think he also means, perhaps, for lectures, too...]--> can we expand this rule to podcasts??? Anyway, keep up the good work...you're on the right trail.Read full review »
