Straightforward advice, narrow appeal
I began listening to this show because of Dave Ramsey's crusade against the credit card industry. I have also enjoyed his musings and observations about our behavior as consumers ("when was the last time you heard someone say, 'I'm saving up to buy a...'?"). Unfortunately, this is hardly an open talk show about personal finance. Instead, it is an extension of the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace Program (which includes books, classes, and live events). While what the program promotes is valuable, it is a rigid program and it doesn't necessarily make for good radio. When callers call into the show, the host doesn't allow much wiggle room or variation from the plan. This is a sign of his dedication to the "baby steps", but it is frustrating when the host will not give answers to some legitimate questions because the caller isn't 110% on board with every detail of the plan. This might include a couple that has decided to keep separate checking accounts or is paying off debts in an order other than the prescribed debt snowball...even if it is working for them. It's all or nothing. The program seldom has true dialog. It is always, "what's your situation?" followed by, "here's what the plan says you should do." Again, it is a good plan for some people and you can hear their passion and enthusiasm about it, but I think this podcast (and radio show) is missing a big opportunity to expand its appeal. Also, the host inserts way too many plugs into the course of the calls. These are for a handful of books or products that are available from his site or from sponsors. He often over-simplifies matters by pointing to them. Problem with work? just read "48 Days...". Family issues? read "Boundaries". Nervous about identity theft? call Jeff...Read full review »
