Demon Copperhead
I came to listen to “book club” type discussion about Demon. I feel like the hosts did have some valid criticisms of the book. However, one hosts did seem to miss the point a bit regarding the people of this area. Or at least fell into the trap of stereotyping them in ways that was one of the main themes of the book. It was very frustrating to hear him continue to say that the characters weren’t “racist or Bible thumping” enough when the author (who is of the area) is consistently throughout the story telling you that is a caricature used in movie and TV shows to marginalize them. Now, I’m not saying those people don’t exist, and some to extreme degrees, but I feel like she did a good job of representing it throughout the book in a realistic way. For example, Demons mother wasn’t religious because she was raised by abusive Bible thumpers. I feel like some of this is a cultural difference. We’ve seen many “racist, Bible thumpers” flooding our area from more blue states and they do seem to be confused by the fact that we aren’t as “racist and Bible thumping” as they anticipated. A man from Chicago called our community, one of the reddest in a red state (not fun, haha) “woke libs” for not electing a n*zi sympathizer as our mayor. The other host did try and communicate this, which I really appreciated, so maybe my frustration isn’t warranted because both sides were represented, but it was hard to listen to someone read this book and walk away with the hate that she’s trying to combat.

After listening to their show all I wanted to do was grab a beer and crack open a book. Which is not normal behavior for me. This show is a lot of fun and can’t wait for more episodes. Cheers boys .

Love listening to these guys talk prose. As an English teacher and lit lover, it’s nice to hear males talk literature with so much enthusiasm. Every time I hear them I think about Sam, Coach Ernie, Norm, Cliff, Frazier, or Woody from Cheers. I can picture these guys around a bar talking...Read full review »
