I tore through the first two episodes of this pod in what felt like no time... and I want more! The introduction to the first episode hooks you from the get-go: you’re thrust immediately into the story via the perspective of a player on an opposing team, and then Ben Reiter brings it back to his journalism about the Astros, his prediction that the team would win the World Series, and then the crushing realization that the team he rooted for (that his own career rose alongside) was accused of cheating. Sure, you could call this a podcast about the Astros, but the team’s story is only it’s point of departure: it ends up being a podcast about the history of national sports and its inextricable link to the development of the American identity (and what that means about American identity); about the precarious state of journalism and the pitfalls of journalistic optimism; about cheating in sport and in life, and the propensity to strive up to and beyond “the edge” of morality; and about the human condition—about what we ignore, what we excuse, what we value, and what choices we make when the stakes are high. This podcast is historically rich, brimming with juicy information (and songs!) from the past, and full of interviews with the most central folks in the sport who speak with candor and genuine emotion about this scandal’s toll on their lives. Couldn’t recommend this podcast more: we all need a welcome distraction from the pandemic that is not only stimulating in a murder mystery type way, but also as thought-provoking, informative, and sensitive as this pod uniquely is.

More reviews of The Edge: Houston Astros
I thought the book was a 10 out of 10. The podcast with this next chapter of the Astros is a 12! Amazing story told by an extremely talented writer/reporter.

I love the whole podcast and all the interesting things on how someone is innocent or not on the Astros but for the finale I think there is more to it like I kinda wanted to know more about that rich person who bided for the New York Mets

Absolutely loves it, very informative. I don’t even like baseball but the show is a proper 10/10
