Hope and Despair
Ideals are part of what we have, socially aiming for something bigger and better than any one person is equally part of a civic discourse just as is criticism of its failings. Indeed, the US—especially in context of the 1619 Project—is far from perfect, but in striving for a Noble Lie that embraces and balances hope and despair, high-minded ideals are part of what makes us who we are, as a nation and culture.
