A conversation on truly unlocking your superpowers
I was diagnosed with ADHD at six. Combined with a severe visual impairment (which became total blindness later in life,) I was always handeled with care in the classroom. My outbursts, distractability, excitement and talkative nature were always dismissed -- or worse yet, discouraged by teachers and family members. I learned ways of addressing some of these "concerns", which inevitably led to severe self doubt and confidence issues. If only we talked about these attributes like they were the superpowers that they are -- rather than faults or abnormalities... I'm not just excited about Peter's Faster Than Normal podcast, I'm thankful for it -- for so many reasons. As a dad of a four-year-old son who routinely displays many of these same attributes as noted above, I see society, teachers and friends trying to diagnose my child as some sort of disadvantaged individual. FTN has helped me to drastically reframe how I view ADHD, and has helped me to reconsile much of the hurt I've had growing up and being treated like a devient (and in turn, how I can better prepare and equip my son to love the skills and personalities that make him who he is -- a superhero.) I'll also say that, as someone who works an 8-5 serving students at a major US university who have been diagnosed with disabilities, FTN has helped me reframe my perspective on disability -- even outside of the viewpoint I have as someone who's confident and capable in a significant disability (like total blindness.) Society needs to stop looking at attributes that fall outside of the "norms" as disadvantages -- and start embracing these as refreshing perspectives on the world. You won't regret tuning into the FTN podcast. Peter has a great ability to hone in and rframe the narative on ADHD, and attracts great guests who share their perspective and powerful takeaways. Thanks for the show, Peter -- and excited to see how it grows as more superheroes take notice!Read full review »
