Greatest Games: Benfica 5-3 Real Madrid, 1962

Description
Join Marcus Speller and Jonathan Wilson, this time alongside author and commentator David Bolchover, for another episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Today we’re heading back to 1962 to celebrate one of the most influential figures in 20th century football: Béla Guttmann. His Benfica side beat Real Madrid 5-3 in the 1962 European Cup final, and this extraordinary game was entirely reflective of an extraordinary man. After arriving at Benfica, having won the league the season before with Porto, Guttmann immediately sacked twenty first team players. He then took Benfica to two Primeira Divisāo titles and a triumph in the previous European Cup, before meeting five-time winners Real Madrid in the 1962 final in Amsterdam. A thrilling, chaotic game featuring a Ferenc Puskás hat-trick finished 5-3 to Benfica, with Guttmann cementing himself as one of the finest coaches of any generation. Fancy getting in touch?
