“Maybe this is what happens when something which was done for passion becomes something done for profit. The Ramble has sadly become a bland, generic football podcast.
Last season was the best ever for the Ramble with 2 shows a week from the original 4 and a raft of other unique podcasts. Now the daily shows with a rotating cast does what Guardian Football Weekly and Totally Football do, but does it worse, it’s already stale. The shows hosted by Marcus are the only pods worth listening to.
The Ramble was a pod that was involved in the downfall of Keys and Gray at Sky, now it’s more likely to be a pod that interviews them.
The tie in with gambling is problematic. Problem gambling is causing about one suicide every day, a shocking report concluded last summer. The House of Lords review found that betting blights the lives of two million Britons, with 50,000 children now hooked.
The online betting firm Betway will pay a record £11.6m settlement for accepting stolen money from high-spending “VIP” customers, some of whom were displaying clear signs of gambling addiction.
The Gambling Commission, which has been under fire for being too weak, said its investigation showed that Betway had allowed £5.8m to flow through the business, some of which was stolen money.
It said Betway, whose investors include the South African entrepreneur Martin Moshal, had proved “inadequate” in its dealings with seven customers, failing to fulfil its obligations to prevent both money laundering and problem gambling.”
