Home is a Construct
My husband and I have been “sharing” space with friends and family for 40 years and agree 1,000,000,000%! There are so many mutual benefits to it—love, support, fun, less financial pressure, less maintenance pressure on one person, environmentally friendly. The homelessness pressure in California has finally forced lawmakers into allowing ADU units to address the situation. We also found that our four children got along better when they had to share bedrooms because they learned cooperation skills; when they had single bedrooms, they were much more territorial. Having a grandparent in the home also taught them empathy, patience, compassion. There’s a lot we can learn from other countries and our own history and face the future fearlessly.
