The Thoughtful Discussion that the United States (and the World) Need
Right now, one could easily get the impression that all thinkers are rampant ideologues. This show helps dispel that notion. The show is primarily a series of interviews between Yascha Mounk and academics, politicians, activists, and other public thinkers. Professor Mounk himself is very much a centre-left liberal, concerned about inequality and injustice but also about individual rights and the rise of collective identity. It is clear that he has arrived at his current position after much consideration and, indeed, he identifies unfairness in contemporary America that is overlooked by many contemporary progressives. His guests embrace a range of viewpoints but always provide valuable information and insights. This show is the perfect antidote to the notion (on both the left and the right) that “centrists” or “liberals” are simply too close-minded to challenge the orthodoxy with which they were brought up. It is also a welcome reminder of what a good conversation sounds like. Although the show focuses on the USA, it addresses issues that affect most Western countries. I highly recommend it.
