Description
The apostle Paul said, "Even if we or an angel from heaven preach to you any other gospel than that which we have preached let him be accursed," Galatians 1:8. Welcome to our Special Study Series as we think about today the subject of angels. Angels are very unique and special in many ways in the New Testament. They are also a very curious topic to many people today. Angels have been the subject of a host of newsmagazines, tabloids, and even whole TV shows have been based on the idea of angels. In fact, Time magazine recently conducted a poll among American adults on the subject of angels. The results were that 69% believe that angels do exist, 45% claim to have had a personal guardian angel, and 32% claimed they had felt some angelic presence at some time in their life. With a lot of fault among people today about angels, we want to direct our attention to what the Bible says on this subject. Apart from what tabloids, magazines, and Hollywood may produce, what does the word of God really teach on the subject of angels? First, let's get a definition of what we’re talking about. Angels are an order of supernatural, heavenly beings who act as God's messengers. In fact, the Hebrew and the Greek words have some very unique meanings Both the Hebrew and Greek words for angel can mean either angel or messenger, depending on the context. When we talk about angels, we're talking about God's special servants whom he issued to do certain jobs and tasks which we'll talk about in our study. What do angels look like in the Bible? To familiarize ourselves with this subject, let's remind ourselves of certain appearances that occurred in the Bible. In the religious world most photos or drawings depict that angels have wings, they've got a harp, and they've got a halo. When you see them in the Bible do they have wings, a harp, or a halo then? What would an angel look like if you were to see one? Here's what the Bible says. At times, angels can't be distinguished from people. In Genesis 18:2; 16 during the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah they just thought the angels were men. When they came to Abraham, they looked like men. Sometimes angels can't be distinguished from other people in the Bible. Some angels, but not all, have the ability to fly, Daniel 9:21. Revelation 14:6, describes angels as flying or moving very fast. Some of the seraphim and cherubim, which were special servants of God, did have wings, but not all of them did. Even in passages where the angels are described as flying, it's often in very apocalyptic, figurative context. We know that they were very awesome creatures, Isaiah 6. Ezekiel 1 describes the majesty and the power of these beings and in great detail. There are times where they were clothed in white and they did shine, for example in John 20:12, depicts certain angels that did have that appearance. What we learn about the appearances of angels in the Bible is they may look like people, they may have certain special qualities, or they may be something so majestic and graceful that we would stand in awe of the God who created them. Let's consider the nature of angels. What do we know about the angels and their nature? We know that angels are created beings, Colossians 1:16 says, "All things were created by him and for him." Psalm 148:2 and the following verses say this about angels and their unique nature, "Praise Him, all angels; Praise Him, all hosts!" Psalm 148:5 says, "Let them praise the name of the Lord, For He commanded and they were created." Who commanded? Who was created? God commanded the creation of the angels and He commanded they praise Him. Angels are created beings and they are immortal beings. In Luke 20:36 the Bible says, "Nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to Angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection." We learn from this verse that the things that we mortals face like dea
