Old School Gamers, this is your time
The Grognard Files is one of my favourite podcasts and considering there's about 4 million RPG related pods out there that's saying a lot. I've recently returned to tabletop gaming after a 25 (?) year hiatus and, even with the RPG community seemingly being more popular than ever, these guys have a unique perspective - that of the British gamer in the 1980s. They understand the massive impact of Michael Moorcock, Marillion and Robin of Sherwood. Even when TGF covers games I never played I still get a lot out of it. It actually makes sense of stuff I read about in White Dwarf and Imagine 30 odd years ago. I don't know if D&D is more popular than it's ever been- but it's definitely had a resurgence. All those podcasts and YouTube videos and Twitter memes have made it seem less mysteriously cultish and more approachable for the young, and have rekindled the passion for lapsed middle aged gamers like myself. Now, having picked up Dungeons & Dragons 5E I’ve been inspired -by podcasts such as The Grognard Files- to start running a game for people at work - most of whom, it has to be said, weren’t even alive back in the days when White Dwarf was still good. Can't wait for the upcoming episodes focussing on Imagine Magazine. Now guys, how about some stuff on Citadel Miniatures?Read full review »
