Problematic
I find it highly problematic that the presenters of this show, on their episode on the Taiping Rebellion, inexplicably and out of the blue, chose to use Islam as an example of cult mentality. They described Islam as the consequence of “a dream experienced in a cave by the wealthy son of a merchant born in Medina” - a statement wrong factually (he was born in Mecca, and was in poverty for most of his life) as well as revealing an Orientalist mindset dominated by the self-proclaimed superiority of Western rationalism over other worldviews (ironically, throughout this very episode they were railing against Eurocentricism). I am not here to espouse the theological arguments for Islam - it’s not necessary. It is enough to say that such a statement, made by supposed historians - belittling the entire great history, tradition and legacy of Islam as a cult - reveals the shocking amateurishness of these presenters. Shame, truly.

Tight episodes. Humor. Very listenable. I mean, I knew very little Chinese history before this and know I know more having gone through 37 episodes while commuting, but if you're going to cram a chinese history, this is a great one to do it with.Read full review »
