Delightfully detailed, just a touch whimsical
The History of England is one of my three favourite podcasts, along with the Age of Napoleon and the History of Byzantium. David may self-deprecatingly refer to himself as “a bloke in a shed”, but he takes the original source material seriously indeed, and finds a way to bring it to life with an amazing balance of character studies, action, and his own brand of humour and whimsy. I found the podcast sometime around episode 340 (during the reign of Charles I) and after following along into the 370s I’ve now started listening from the beginning in Anglo-Saxon times on episode 1. I just finished Episode 159, and while I’m sad to see the sun set on the era of the longbow trouncing the Frogs, I’m excited for the epic saga of strife that is the War of the Roses.

David Crowther's style makes this podcast. He has inserted a touch of humour into his presentation style, which has turned the story he's telling into more that just a sequence of events. I thoroughly enjoy this podcast, and is one of my favourites of all genres.Read full review »
