“I've been an avid fan of the broad Polygon universe of podcasts, videos, and reporting for a bit over a year. What always sets it apart for me--and leads to many recommendations for viewing and listening by friends who otherwise might not know much about gamer culture/news or geeky pop culture generally--is the people behind it. They're simply lovely, funny, kind, intelligent individuals who, altogether, help make any day just a bit brighter. The History of Fun is a highlight among highlights for many of the same reasons: the three people at its center are delightful beyond words, and THOF showcases them gloriously. Each episode tackles something you'll remember, but something you probably don't give much thought to: Monopoly, or the Beanie Baby craze. Memories from childhood, all connected by the through-line of "funness," unpackaged and broken down, delving deep into the (fascinating) histories that I'd never otherwise think to explore. I've never reviewed anything on here, but I can't recommend this enough to anyone who likes learning about what hides in plain sight, what led to the creation of weird, famous "fun" things, and the dramas and weird historical turns that gave us modern games, toys, and much else.”Read full review »
