I've always been fascinated by the ancient Romans, but it was this show that rekindled my interest. After Rome ended on HBO (I still get sad when I think about it), it left a vacuum that the History Channel just wasn't filling: there are only so many times one can watch hours-long documentaries made up almost entirely of canned footage. In The History of Rome, Mr. Duncan does a great job of hitting the sweet spot between the grand events and battles of Roman history and the personal dramas that unfolded around them. Additionally, I appreciate the way he makes sure to separate the facts from the more apocryphal bits that are so common in the Roman historical texts. Though in my opinion he tends to focus a bit too much on wartime Rome, I must say that Mr. Duncan does an admirable job of making even the more bland bits entertaining. Oh, and unlike the TV documentaries mentioned above, Mr. Duncan knows when to shut up. Never have I listened to an episode of his program and wished it was over, and if that's not the most ringing of endorsements, I don't know what is.Read full review »
