Healthy but Still Tasty Vegetables
I listen to a lot of podcasts. A lot of podcasts. The vast majority of which are of little intellectual value. I get pangs of guilt that I should stretch myself and be better informed so I make myself listen to a daily news based podcast a day. It was a chore for the longest time and kind of pointless. The podcast would be on in the background but I’d zone out and not actually take it in... Till I discovered the Economist podcast. Well, goshdarnit, a news and current affairs pod I actually enjoy! It manages to be informative and really interesting without pandering or being pretentious. A couple of examples... A piece about the reclusive Algerian President. Elderly and sick he hadn’t been seen in public since 2014. Yet supposedly he’s running the country. Fascinating. My previous knowledge of Algeria would barely fill a postage stamp. Then you’ll have a lighter but no less interesting report on the rise of competitive male pole dancing. I didn’t even know such a thing existed. And each piece is long enough to tell you what you need to know without outstaying it’s welcome and becoming boring. The presenter, whose name escapes me, has a lovely voice too. I’d like him to read to me at night when my insomnia kicks in. This podcast is like eating your veg but they’re covered in mayo or ketchup.

Love this new Economist show.

I love how The Intelligence a) deals with serious news stories, but is unafraid to be humourous at the same time, b) ties in and adds on to stories from the current issue of the magazine. They delve deep and let listeners learn a whole lot in a relatively short amount of time.
