Tasting Notes:  I didn't think I would love this whiskey, but boy was I wrong. This is a 12yr old Buffalo Trace aged in French oak barrels. Some other French oak whiskies tend to be overpowering, but this was just the right amount of silkiness, mouthfeel and richer vanilla and red fruit flavor that I love. It somehow manages a sweet mouthfeel without tasting sweet and also manages a fairly heavy oak profile without tasting too heavy. Nougat, caramel, vanilla and a very finely wrought and...

Jim Beam's latest innovation is a 5 year old 94 proof SINGLE MALT whiskey made with 100% barley malt, distilled in column stills in Clermont Kentucky from a jug yeast mash, and aged in new American oak, as stipulated by US law. This is one of many recently released barley-based whiskies by American distilleries, looking to push the category forward. Toasted cereal grain on the nose with dark fruit and a distinct breadiness, akin to heirloom rye bread. On the palate it's nutty, with...

Tasting Notes:  If you like drinking LOCAL and you're into LOW CAL and LOW ALC, then Upland Little Dragon is the best-tasting one on the market, in our opinion. Many beers in this category suffer from being either under malted, or under hopped or over hopped and under malted. Still, Little Dragon miraculously manages the exact right balance of each of these, with enough malt heft to provide body and just enough hop bitterness and aromatics to deliver a true IPA experience but with only 4%...

Tasting Notes:  The latest Orphan Barrel project is a fantastically tasty blend of Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee bourbons, all bottled at the Dickel distillery in Tullahoma. I'm glad to see they could pull this one off, as Dickel is not to everyone's taste, but they've managed to sweeten up the normally corn-heavy whiskey with MGP, along with some spice and elegance from an 18-year-old Kentucky bourbon as well. Doesn't matter where it came from, the juice is legit. Bottled at 90 proof,...

Calumet Farm may be on the biggest "sleeper hit" whiskey brands on the market. Yes, they source all their Kentucky whiskey, but they've been doing it for so long they've got one of the largest selections of sourced older bottlings which have been hitting the market in recent years. Their "Bull Lea" 10 year is a non-chill filtered 100 proof, 10yr old bourbon dripping with character. We love the fact that it's bottled at 100 proof which softens the oak impact just enough to make it...

Tasting Notes:  Flavored whiskey and moonshine have exploded in recent years, starting with traditional flavors like cinnamon, peach, and blackberry, but watch out, because the confectionary flavors, like chocolate, peanut butter, and now Dough Ball Birthday Cake whiskey are beginning to make a splash. Bottled at 70 proof, Dough Ball is fun in a bottle. Not really made for your traditional whiskey drinker, but if you're a big fan of Ole Smoky flavored moonshine, don't miss out on this fun,...

Elijah Craig has spent lots of marketing dollars in the last few years on building a campaign around Elijah Craig bourbon as the "go to" for an Old Fashioned, which is quite serviceable in almost every level, but we've always been fans of rye based old fashioned which is why the Elijah Craig RYE is a perfect opportunity to make this drink. Bottled at 94 proof, the EC rye is on the lighter side of rye whiskey mashbills, but that makes it all the better as a sub for this classic cocktail. The...

Tasting Notes:  What happens when you combine a very old scotch brand with pedigree reaching back hundreds of years and pineapple? A surprisingly delicious and drinkable combo. Buchanan's regular blended scotch is certainly a sleeper, but the matly goodness of the whisky is complimented perfectly by the tropical fruit both on the nose and the palate. It drinks sweeter than average, but if you're looking for a shooter with your Corona give this tropical scot a try!

Tasting Notes:  The shocking truth about Jack Daniel's is that the older the whiskey and higher the proof the BETTER it keeps getting. Whiskey brands for years have leant on marketing speak around "the perfect age" or "aged to perfection" while being relatively vague about actual age, but then end up releasing older whiskies that just aren't quite as good as their regular line up. This is not the case with Jack, as every experiment in longer ageing as well as higher proofs has proven far...

Tasting Notes:  The first Eclipse single barrel sold out so quickly we went ahead and grabbed the sister barrel and bottled it up just in time for Monday's HISTORIC celestial event. If you are looking for something to toast the eclipse with, what better way than an Indiana-made, Indiana-bottled, and Indiana-sold bourbon? 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% barley malt, aged 5 years and bottled at cask strength with no chill-filtration at 114.8 proof. Brown sugar tornado in the glass with a touch of mint...

Tasting Notes:  Three year old Buffalo Trace, mashbill #1 bottled at 80 proof. First off, the ground work of Buff Trace is in every bottle, the baseline sweetness is there along with a young spice, that drinks a little hot, but for the price, it's hard to beat. The oak is foundational, and leans towards cinnamon on the palate finishing with a perfectly pleasant bite to go along with the vanilla, toffee, caramel sweetness apparent already even at this young age. No joke, grab a decanter and...

Tasting Notes:  After years of successfully growing the Old Forester brand, Master Blender Jackie Zykan struck out on her own with the Neeley Family Distillery in Stanford, Kentucky. Their first product, called Hidden Barn, honors the tradition of illicit stills dotting the Kentucky countryside, painted black as to avoid detection by the telltale fungus that grows black on all the buildings where distilling is taking place. Their Series 1 product is a small batch blend of 4 and 5 year old...

Tasting Notes:  Five staves of Baked American Pure and five staves of Roasted French Mendiant oak have produced the harmonious balance of sweet vanilla to dark roasted cocoa that exemplifies the Black and White cookie itself for which this single barrel expression of Maker's Mark is named. Bottled at 111.2 proof, I still think most people sleep on how good these Maker's Barrel picks are, and have been. Of course the pricing was a little salty when they launched this project several years...

Long Drink has EXPLODED in popularity in the last several year. Relatively unknown outside of Finland, this refreshing mix of gin, citrus and carbonation hits the right note all year long, and now they've got PEACH flavor, the perfect compliment to any hang. If you haven't tried Long Drink yet, start with a 6pk of traditional and a 6pk of Peach. You won't be disappointed. Also, one of the company founders, Evan Burns, is an IU graduate!

Tasting Notes:  This 18yr old traditional Heaven Hill mashbill of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% barley malt is bottled at 120 proof. While past releases of the heritage have been less than stellar (Corn Whiskey?) this bottle reclaims the throne. While Elijah Craig's 18yr has more than tripled in price, it's always been a 90 proofer and still is today. This is the big boy version and you can tell the first time your nose gets even remotely close to the glass. Big wave of leather and furniture...

Tasting Notes:  Alma Miel is classified as a Joven tequila. The Spanish word “Joven” translates to “young”. Joven tequila is made from a blend of unaged and aged tequilas. Continuing Don Julio González’s legacy of living Por Amor to craft only the exceptional, Tequila Don Julio pays homage to the heart and soul of tequila with the introduction of Tequila Don Julio Alma Miel, a blend of Blanco tequila distilled with oven-roasted agave honey and Añejo tequila which has been aged for at least...

Tasting Notes: Real Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey and ginger ale perfectly mixed at 7% ABV. The refreshing taste of ginger ale and Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey come together in perfect harmony, creating an easy-to-drink, smooth and balanced Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey cocktail. It's a crisp canned cocktail with notes of tangy ginger highlighted by Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey.

Tasting Notes:  For the 150th Kentucky Derby, Woodford chose Kentucky artist Wylie Caudill, a chalk and mural artist known for large scale, bold, and colorful works of art, as the perfect compliment to this year's HUGE anniversary race. If you haven't already grabbed your 150th anniversary bottle you better run because they are going fast. Oh, and by the way, the sweet nectar inside is just classic Woodford, but that's alright with us any day of the week. With the DNA of Old Forester,...

Green River continues to make great strides under the watchful eye of Bardstown Bourbon Co. Their latest release of a rye whiskey does not fail to impress as well, both in terms of the mature flavor profile, but also the price. Sweet pine and florals on the nose with a touch of nutmeg. On the palate, sweet cinnamon, smooth oak, a lifted, tingling pine note with a touch of soft caramel and a little vanilla as well. Bottled at 95 proof and for $40 it's a great value from a proud and old DSP.
