To my delight I discovered this illuminating podcast (the 1996 Oklahoma bombing) narrated by The New Yorker writer, Jeffery Toobin. He dives deep into what incited Timothy McVeigh to mass murder and maim innocents...and connects the decades-long (and tolerated) violent history of America’s White...Read full review »

This is a compelling true crime story of lives altered by an industry that purports to “save” children, but obviously does not. In addition to the young people forced into these communities, their parents are victims, too. Not only by CEDA, but also by, in this case, the private investigator that...Read full review »

I attended Rocky Mountain Academy 94-97, Ascent in 94, Explorations in Montana, Amity in Arezzo, Italy and SUWS in South Idaho. These programs used highly abusive psychological tactics to exploit families and take their money. I was in these programs from the age of 13-17. These programs acted as...Read full review »

I attended A Better Way Youth Academy dba Coral Reef, in Western Samoa, ran by NFL player Rodney Rice. Redcliff Accent in Utah, and Mission Mountain School in Montana. All of which catapulted me into a lifetime of PTSD, trouble, and turmoil.

I attended a spin-off of CEDU called Amity in Arezzo, Italy in the early 90’s. This is an extremely accurate portrayal of what life was like at these places.

Eh
I was able to listen to all the episodes so that was good but it was so biased and one sided that it ruined the podcast.
Luna-23456 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 04/07/22
I found this podcast to be borderline true crime. It is much more of an expose concerning the “troubled kid” industry that was en vogue in the 80s & 90s.

I just started to listen and I love true crime but this is sad

This story is so sad. I’m not surprised the government officials would not pass a this law.

Do not listen to this if you have suffered trauma or are sensitive to subject matter that discusses abusive methods in the treatment of children for behavioural “problems”. Anyone who exposes children to trauma or retraumatizes ANY child is NEVER helping, whatever they may claim, all they are...Read full review »

The content of this story is both interesting and disturbing but Josh does a wonderful job of being empathetic yet objective while interviewing the victims and laying out the information he has.

This podcast is fascinating and truly mind blowing. I cannot genuinely believe that these facilities exist, especially in a country that is meant to be as “civilised” as America. The podcast does a fantastic job at showing how horrific these places are. It’s hard hitting stuff but I honestly...Read full review »

My parents sent me to one of these programs around the time that Daniel disappeared and I have spent years grappling with it. Many kids ran from the institution that I attended, especially during the propheets (called workshops where I was a resident, but identical to what is described by CEDU...Read full review »

This was an excellent, heartbreaking podcast that really explored one family’s story and the history of the “tough love” schools.

Watched the Paris Hilton documentary and got hooked into the small amount of press about CEDU and emotional growth schools. This documentary is great - I binged it in a few days - and seems to pull together a lot of the current writing on these institutions. Heartbreaking, of course! My only...Read full review »

Fantastic podcast. It’s heartbreaking to hear that there was a cult that involved children and everything that they had to endure. 😞

The story is heartbreaking and the solution was a relief. The best parts were the interviews with family and witnesses who were genuine and real. The self-congratulatory tone of the presenters was off-putting, especially in the final episode (omg - the cops had to drive out of town to get a DNA...Read full review »

I would like to think that poor Daniel is alive but I doubt it very much. He loved his parents and wouldn’t want them to suffer. Don’t offer false hope, it hurts too much. Great podcast, well researched and a story that needed to be told.

I have been to one of these schools. These schools are all over the world. I was sent to another country. Please cover all the different schools! Hindsight is a great teacher with lessons that come too late for many but those of us with ears to hear can learn from their experiences. My heart hurts for these caring parents who only wanted the best for their son.

Amazing podcast! My heart breaks for Daniel’s parents, but Daniel’s best friend Nick is the one who really made me cry. He loved and cared about his friend so much. You can hear it in his voice. I hope he has somehow managed to live a good life despite the tragic loss of his best friend.

I came home from a boarding school in Missouri back in 2012. I had spent two years there and I felt like I was alone, that no one had experienced the literal hell that I had. Great podcast. I am a survivor of a program in AZ. I was there for almost three years. Although there were differences, I lived through something eerily similar, and work everyday to heal from the lasting damage it caused. It’s hard to express how validating and important listening to this was.

This had all the markings of something that would cover just the facts and allow you to decide what is what ( real journalism), but then devolved into anti capitalist leftist garbage in episode 5. Don’t get sucked in and don’t waste your time with this anti-American garbage

Truly outstanding investigative journalism! The story of Daniel and how he has never been found is devastating for his family and that “Private Investigator” is preying on his parents emotions! He is a fraud and a joke! He should be ashamed! This was an excellent podcast, Thank you!
