Gillingham 1-1 Grimsby Town: Another opportunity comes and goes
Listen now
Description
After a difficult week that saw a number of his first-team squad hit with a sickness bug that forced him to cancel midweek training, Stephen Clemence shuffled the pack for the visit of strugglers Grimsby. The result was a switch to a back four, and a much more forward-thinking performance as the Gills turned in a far more positive performance than we’ve seen in recent weeks. But, despite that positivity, the same old problems came back to bite us once again. We conceded a poor goal after Grimsby went unchallenged from box to box after a Gills corner to go 1-0 up, but the Gills equalised immediately through George Lapslie’s close-range stretched volley. The second half saw the Gills pile the pressure on The Mariners but, as we’ve seen all too often this season, simply weren’t able to put any of their chances away. Oli Hawkins, Connor Mahoney and Shad Ogie all had great chances, but failed to find the net as the Gills ended the match frustrated with a 1-1 draw, despite the improved performance. Owen takes the helm for the regular post-match pod as he unpacks another frustrating day at Priestfield with fellow regulars Matt and Dave. Can the Gills still make it to the playoffs, or will we prove to be, as Clemence warned a couple of weeks ago, a “nearly team” in League 2 this season? This is a public episode.
