Suicide - the elephant in the room
I find myself staying subscribed to this podcast even though I find it very problematic. Most of the stories recently seem to feature particularly youngish men who have gone missing near to the sea, which would explain why their bodies have never been recovered. Often alcohol is involved. The family member interviewed always refuses to countenance the possibility that their loved one has died by suicide, which is understandable. They often describe them as being a happy person while simultaneously unconsciously mentioning other things which make you suspect that they may not really been that aware of their loved one’s inner life and problems which they may have hidden from their family and friends. Or, the individual clearly has issues in their life which could have led them to contemplating suicide but this is largely glossed over. We know that men struggle to talk about their feelings and this is why suicide rates are so high amongst men. I understand that the podcast wants to respect the families of these missing people, but by completely ignoring or underplaying the most likely scenario that they died by suicide this seems to give false hope while increasing stigma around suicide. It also would obviously reduce the dramatic tension, and exploiting this fact is in my opinion deeply problematic. The podcast also doesn’t provide resources for people experiencing suicidal feelings, despite the content striking me as very triggering and making references to suicide. The second issue with the podcast is that the script is hackneyed, repetitive and badly written, frequently using poor grammar or incorrectly using certain vocabulary. A recent cherry on the cake was Pandoras Sykes’s inability to pronounce the (well known) place name Guildford, repeatedly pronouncing it GUILDford, despite being cut around the interviewee pronouncing it correctly. I find the stories on his podcast interesting so I will keep listening, but a lot could be done to cover the topic more responsibly and to improve the writing. EDIT Oct ‘23: Why is this podcast now part of ‘Crime Corner’? Some of the missing people may be victims of crime, but voluntarily going missing or completing suicide is NOT A CRIME. Stop stigmatising people with mental health problems.

For someone who doesn’t normally enjoy or listen to podcast, I found this brilliant! Very interesting, factual and always left me thinking. Loved having family members of the missing telling their stories, made it more personal. Would highly recommend! Wish there were more!

From the moment I listened to episode 1 I was hooked, beautifully told by an empathetic and sympathetic host. Wonderfully put together and edited. I think it’s important and respectful that these stories are created with the families/friends and that the families and friends get a chance to...Read full review »
