“I love the analytical view this podcast takes on Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Schubes has a fresh viewpoint on these books that he showed in Potterless and now this series. As far as podcasters go, he is my 2nd favorite(Billy Boyd and Dom Monaghan on the Friendship Onion tie for first, sorry Schubes)
The only issue I have with this podcast is the overt political tones brought up, and I know theyre not always Liberal/Left ideals and he has criticized democratic leaders as well specifically President Biden and the NYC Governor i believe it was. However, whether you’re right, left, center, or noncommittal I understand that freedom of speech is our first amendment and is extremely important, but if you’re going to do a PJATO themed podcast I believe it would be best to keep to that theme and don’t bring up politics, this country has become so divided and each side blames the other, I would rather a podcast be made that brings the two sides together and preferably realizes that there is more than 2 sides to people, and more than 2 sides to politics. Also, even though you do give Riordan credit for his reparations to extremely tiny insensitive phrases or comparations, you have to remember that none of those were meant to be offensive and often times aren’t insensitive, they’re what was common less than 20 years ago. IE: the Rasta cap Grover wears is for practical use since it has head room and it was extremely popular for everyone to wear in the 90-00s, it’s a nod to Jamaican culture not the appropriation of said culture, the same goes with Native American references, it’s not to be disrespectful and if he’d left them out intentionally it would be far worse because that would be as if he’s excluding all other cultures when really, he is extremely inclusive of all religions and ethnicities. You also can’t expect an older Caucasian male to expect the massive leaps we’ve taken in the acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community and the cessation of certain words which were used in clinical senses back then and have since become hateful words. IE: JRR Tolkien used the word F*ggot to describe a bundle of sticks and q***r to describe weird or strange. Back then those were completely innocent words and have no real relation to what they’re used for today. I find it extremely easy to read the words with the intent they had because I understand the constant change this world is going through and am able to separate intentional offense from completely unintentional micro-offense.
I love the podcast, I love the easy way Schubes talks to his guests and jokes around with them and the fact that they’re all actual friends, and I don’t mean he has to stop doing anything or has to change anything because this is his podcast and he can do whatever he wants to with it and can say whatever he wants to on it and I support his right to do so and will still listen to the podcast regardless.
I also apologize for the mini rant, but that is my opinion on the matter and I hope we can make it to the point in our society where we don’t have to bring up issues from previous years, but can look ahead to solve future issues. Rick Riordan has changed many lives and has brought so much diversity to his books and bringing up tiny issues that very few had noticed before only serves to detract from his incredible legacy.”
