Fantastic descriptions of the past bought to life. The care taken to deliver the stories of those veterans and of those lost is touching.

Paul Reed is a master storyteller. He draws the listener in by solidly researching each topic… and then delivering a highly informative, comprehensive and well-paced summary of the topic at hand. But it is Paul’s deep respect and honor for the participants of The Great War… demonstrated through...Read full review »

Paul has a very calm and soothing way of explaining a very turbulent period of history. I always come away feeling a bit wiser and also more in touch, on a personal level, with faded soldiers from a distant time.

Discovered this interesting and informative podcast. Started from the first one and working all the way through. Just listened to the episode on Remembrance, The Unknown Warrior. The most interesting and most sad, poignant and powerful episode. Absolutely enthralling. Thank you so much.

I cannot say how much I like this podcast. I listened to one episode after hearing Paul Reed with Dan Snow and was hooked. I have been mostly a WWII history person since my Dad and uncles all fought on the US side. But Paul has me really drawn me on WWI. This podcast has been so educational, with...Read full review »

The episode covering High Wood was very interesting. Another Battalion that attacked High Wood on the 15th of July. The 16th Battalion was composed of members and ex members of the Church Lads Brigade (also 19th service Bat). The Battalion suffered 120 killed plus wounded. By September over half...Read full review »

The episode with Beverley Palin was fascinating, such an interesting lady with a fabulous laugh. Even using a separate speaker on full volume I found it really difficult to follow because it was difficult to hear. The episode on the Monocled Mutineer was great, I remember watching the series,...Read full review »

The podcast about training the mass of new recruits who joined in 1914 was very illuminating. My grandfather joined up as a private in September 1914 and was discharged as a major in September 1921. He served in France from 1915. It shed a lot of light on some personal family history.

This podcast is well produced and professionally scripted. Very interesting content with not just strategy and operations as the main theme. For example, Birds on the Western front is absolutely marvelous in how it incorporates soldiers’ civilian lives connecting with their war time surroundings.

Mr Reed really takes the time to address the humans who fought and died in the Great War. He details their service and their lives— really makes it so much more relatable then just a discussion of battle tactics and weaponry
