I would give this podcast 100 stars if I could.
Holy moly. Where do I even begin. My good friend started me off with this series back in March-ish of 2019. He’d been into it for quite a while by then, and was recommending it to me as we like to share our interests with each other. I have a very short attention span with podcasts, and, unfortunately, I was afraid this story would be too goofy for my tastes. I listened to the first episode, forgot about it, and put it way off until December. Then I decided to give it another try. Oh boy. If I could go back in time and talk to myself, I would say, “Javier, you’re a god darn fool if you don’t keep on listening to this thing.” It’s like magic. Re-listening to the first episode and listening to the second got me immediately hooked on the series. The characters are complex and captivating and relatable. They all have so much depth and diverse, not just in their identity, but their personality. That’s the other thing. Representation matters so much. I’m so hooked on Juno Steel: a bisexual nonbinary person who prefers he/him pronouns but refers to himself often as a lady, and is usually depicted as a person of colour in the episode posters and all of the fanart (that I’ve seen so far). As a nb bi of colour myself, it made me so happy to see someone just like me play the protagonist in such an amazing project. I especially love the idea that in the future, labels won’t matter. It’ll just be normal to be a nonbinary bisexual, just another trait of your person like being left or right handed. It’s such a great concept, one of many that I love. Now onto the writing. Up until season 3, we’re inside Juno’s head most of the time, and his dry, sarcastic, sort of pessimistic personality shines through in his description and thought process. I feel like I’m seeing the world in his eyes, not just some half hearted attempt at first person story telling. And the level of maturity in the storytelling, the drama, the dialogue, the horror and the love and pain (oh my God, the LOVE. AND THE PAIN.) just feels so realistic. I love the audio being edited so that the dialogue doesn’t sound edited, but flows naturally. The jokes flow naturally as well- they don’t feel forced and they don’t make me roll my eyes- they’re timed so well, even in dark moments, that I can’t help but chuckle. This podcast has such a level of maturity that it can even deal with trauma and mental illness in such an interesting way while also being respectful and accurate. I’m not going to spoil anything, but. Goodness gracious. You, viewer, if you’re caught up, then you probably can guess which episodes I’m talking about. It’s written and handled so well that I’m actually impressed by it. I must commend the writers specifically for specifically this aspect. And finally, dealing with relationships. I think if I say the word “realistic” anymore, I’m gonna be nauseous, but. I could, painfully enough, almost relate to the *ahem* circumstances that occurred between *ahem hem* some of the characters. The pain and regret that never goes away, and having to eventually deal with it after so much time. It’s a bit personal on my part to be saying that, but I just have to say it. I could relate to it, in a way. I felt it on a personal level. And yes, I did shed more than a few thousand tears over it. All in all, I can find almost no flaws with this podcast. Surely, it had some, but none worth mentioning, or none that I saw. It’s inspired me so much, to work on my own art and writing, and given me something to be interested in after many months of absolutely nothing. I want to thank my good friend for getting me into this, The Penumbra Podcast, my hyperfixation and, I’d even go as far as to say, special interest, for the past couple months. And I’d like to thank everyone who works, has worked, and will work on this wonderful project. I hope to see much much more in the future, and, when my financial situation improves, even contribute to keep the good times rolling. 💙

More reviews of The Penumbra Podcast
I keep track of at least two dozen podcasts, and The Penumbra is one of my absolute favorites. The stories are all original and exciting, and I love the different spin they've put on the detective genre, with the future setting and an homme fatale. In fact, all of the episodes have an...Read full review »
