Unsure why this podcast has so many bad reviews, I didn’t get a single ad. It is a well-told and insightful narrative. I would recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I thought this was a very well-researched podcast with a lot of thought and passion put behind it. I appreciated that the narrator was more monotone with his voice because it felt more respectful. The narration was less dramatic than other true crime podcasts which i liked because it sounded more...Read full review »

I liked this podcast but I don’t agree whith “the grimace” Jake made when admitting he murdered Hanna Mae I saw a gleeful smile he tried to stifle.

And sees the world for their cold, black and white facts; many of which he is proud to read off to you from public records searches he has done. Dave accepts these facts as they are, and in my opinion does not even see the potential for nuance in said facts. Also, the way he spoke about “illegal...Read full review »

The “moooore pink moon murders” guy that announces the break is terrifying. However, content is good.

Someone did not do their homework before starting this podcast. Very bad!!! If you are going to put out a podcast about a true crime - DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!

I had already listened to the Piketon - Return to Pike County podcast which was a nail biter. Listening to this is just like waiting for something interesting to happen. He just reads a script with his own words and there’s no vocal fluctuation even. Sound effects were good, but overall pretty...Read full review »

Well done. I’ve learned so much more about the families, area and some insight I was not aware and he has accurate quotes of Jake’s past communication.

Messy… and yeah boring. It could have been really good

The writer and host does an excellent job here. I really learned a lot more about this sad case from this podcast.

I love the narrators tone and cadence, it reminds me of Listening to Kevin Costner in Dances With Wolves. I thought it was excellent in the deep dive into this very tragic case. I only disliked the voice of the man would took the listener to and from commercials that’s why I took away one star.
Bethanygrace73 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 08/26/22
I listened to this twice. Its a great story about an awful crime, focusing on the characters as much as the plot.
yuo3990 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 08/22/22
I listened to probably 7 episodes, in order to gain a real understanding of the show. It’s the worst of true crime reporting/media all together. There was racism (a whole episode on an INCREDIBLY thin connection to cartel ties culminating in the narrator following random Mexican Americans...Read full review »

Eh
This could be good, the writing is mostly interesting and the case is gripping–the descriptions are lovely and the sense of place is extremely well established. But it's basically read in a monotone and I found I couldn't keep my focus because of how dull the delivery is.Read full review »

The case is very interesting but being (obviously) read to gets old fast and the background noises are super annoying. Could be a great pod but the quality isn’t there yet. Supposedly 11 episodes but episodes 5 and 7 are the exact same and listed twice.

As other reviewers, far too many ads that are so loud and break through the calm tone suddenly like a frog horn. But worse still, with 8 deaths, host should have found a way for the listener to grasp who all the people were, where they were found, and help me understand the various relationships...Read full review »

This podcast is one of the best one’s so far! Not sure why the rating is so low, a lot of great information, unless it’s the Wagner fan’s are reviewing this podcast!!
Cvcbbcbjhbbj via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 07/27/22
This is done so well - the reporting, investigation is completed on the ground - in Pike County, in the courtroom. Interviews are with locals. It is interesting and informative. I’ve listened to other podcasts on this case but I think this is the best.
Carla703 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 07/24/22
There’s good information here, but the production value needs work. It’s hard to understand the phone calls, not because of the accents, but because the quality of the audio is fuzzy. The commercials are entirely too loud.
Molliekay via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 07/12/22
Never heard of these murders before. Great research and telling of the families histories. Take a listen … you won’t regret it!
JLM017 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 06/24/22
The research is solid here. Host is a little dull but the story is compelling so it’s fine. But whomever picked the ads should be fired — it is in INCREDIBLY poor taste to advertise guns on a show about a family being shot to death.

The speaker is so monotone and sounds like he is just reading a script. It’s hard to listen to or be interested in. Also sometimes it feels childish, such as referring to “the bad guys” Other things seem overly romanticized or just odd such as saying something like “I pictured the bodies in the...Read full review »

So it seems well-researched, and the writing is fine. However, the production is weird. The choice to have like a Svenghoulie type doing announcements is straight up confounding, and the host’s voice sounds like when you’re in middle school, and the teacher calls on the quiet guy who hates...Read full review »

Raterman does first-rate and comprehensive research into aspects of this case that have been largely ignored because of shocking nature of the crimes involved and the often-sensationalized twists and turns of the investigation, arrests, and prosecution. Very helpful podcast for those who want to...Read full review »

Having the author tell the story that he investigated, studied, lived, and wrote is it’s strength. A horrible crime brought to light.

David does a great job of weaving together all the complexities of the various family dynamics and different directions this story takes. Enjoyable throughout, and I hope there will be more episodes when the trial(s) conclude!

Interesting events with lots of questions. The hosts voice is pretty monotone and there is a fair amount of repeating things earlier said. There’s a hilarious amount of sound effects in the background… I’m going to try a few more and see how it shapes up..

Not sure how many podcasts the host has done but I’m sure he will get better and better, BUT PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD …get rid of that announcer!!!!! Narrator is a fan of inserting sound effects which are more annoying than useful. Felt like he was trying to imitate other podcasts that feature more live interviews etc. A few episodes could have been left out where he just rattled off history that didn’t really enhance the story in any way. If you want to learn about this story listen to piketon massacre. This host is so boring, seems like he is just reading from a script. He’s also completely accepting of all of the evidence and the state’s case, without asking questions or addressing any holes. Just not good journalism.

A middle of the road 3 star podcast. Tho had to take a star off because there’s way too many ads. Like mega ads

This story could be really interesting, but I gave up because the rapid slew of ads that kept cutting in made it impossible to follow along. The podcast isn’t even edited so the story cuts around the ads in a dramatic or coherent way, it just gets cut into with no warning.

Kudos to a great, professional journalist. Do yourself a favor and listen to this podcast, you won’t be disappointed

As mentioned it felt like the Narrator was reading direct from a statistical sheet and also his voice is not good enough to hold the audience. Seems like the narrator doesn't understand poor people. Seems tone deaf, praises life struggles as a personality trait as opposed to a life thrust on them, very romanticized view of the situations every person is dealing with. A privileged narration.
