“I learned of this podcast by way of Gilbert Gottfried’s podcast when Ben Mankiewicz was a guest.
For the uninitiated, Ben Mankiewicz is a film historian and the estimable host of Turner Classic Movies (TCM). The idea here is to interview an important film industry figure. For this first season director Peter Bogdanovich was chosen. This was an inspired choice. Ben Mankiewicz is the grandson of legendary screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, who is most famous for having written Citizen Kane with Orson Welles. Mr. Bogdanovich is well known for his work as a film historian having interviewed and befriended Welles and many other Hollywood legends. I was glad that Ben mentioned early on that he and Peter are friends.
Mr. Bogdanovich has had some wonderful career highs - and tragic lows. He has spoken of these many times in the past, in print, on television and other podcasts. He is a natural storyteller and is always interesting to listen to. This particular forum is ideal because his whole life is laid out over a series of seven episodes. There are three bonus episodes featuring early interviews that he conducted with Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Henry Fonda, James Stewart and John Wayne. There is a final ‘Virtual Conversation’ featuring Ben, Peter and Alicia Malone. It’s available on YouTube if you want to see it as well as hear it. As befits the time, it’s done via ‘Zoom.’ The whole series is well produced. Ben Mankiewicz does his usual thorough and outstanding job.
Peter Bogdanovich has made enormous contributions to film: as an historian, a writer, a director of many fantastic classic films and occasionally as an actor. In spite of many setbacks, he has continued to soldier on and I respect him for the loyalty he has inspired among his friends. Recently he directed ‘She’s Funny That Way’, a delightful romantic comedy and an excellent documentary on Buster Keaton. Will he be making more films? One certainly hopes so. IMDb lists one in development and one in production.
I will be there when they open.”
