Well-meaning but misguided material
As a senior and biology major at MIT, I have been have been listening to this podcast for a year now - but with a grain of salt. Several of the interviews that Ryan conducts - especially those with actual medical school admissions - are very helpful. However, I strongly dislike the heavy hand that Ryan has in his hosting. For example, in the podcast about "scariest things about medicine", Ryan and his wife talk about how scary their psychiatric rotation experience was. Although this is an understandable feeling, the way they describe it is insensitive and not as nuanced as I would have hoped. They "looked at pencils differently" and felt "on the edge" while in the ward; "there are certain people who are not allowed out, and now you're with them," his wife laughed. This is a misguided perspective that is so damaging to psychiatric patients, the vast majority of whom are not harmful to others. Most are struggling with addition or suicidal feelings, and schizophrenic patients deserve no less empathy than a patient with cancer or HIV. By perpetuating stereotypes against psychiatric patients, Ryan and his wife are contributing to the prejudice and misunderstandings that such patients have to live with. As someone who has worked extensively at MIT to combat stereotypes like these, and who has spoken to many patients who have been previously hospitalized, this episode made me very sad.Read full review »

Have listened to almost every episode of this podcast and have really enjoyed it! So informative for a premed student, wish I would have found it earlier in my undergrad career but am grateful to have come across it! (Ryan and Allison are great! Thanks for what you guys are doing!)
