“The podcast is excellent, hence the qualm I describe has only lost it one star. Rory Stewart is an intelligent and thoughtful guy, which leads me to believe that his defence of Airbnb as opening up spare rooms that otherwise wouldn’t be put to any use is wilfully missing the point. The fact is that short term holiday lets are often far more lucrative a use of landlords’ accommodation than long term lets to someone who needs a home. This actively removes long term lets from the market, compounding the housing crisis in heavily touristed areas including in areas around the corner from Rory’s old Cumbria constituency.”
