Compelling listening
A brilliant series with a great format: interview political and military experts about the beginning and weekly progress of the Great War. Very informative on the Big Picture as the war develops but also spliced with telling personal anecdotes, newspaper reports and extracts from statesmen's memoirs. The series was made by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and therefore also covers in detail how Australia became enmeshed in the quagmire. Non-Australian listeners will enjoy this perspective on how one of Britain’s distant dominions caught the war fever of 1914. My one minuscule complaint? The cover of the podcast has wiped the state of Tasmania off the outline map of Australia in order to fit in the word “War” … surely we need more maps of Tassie? Well done ABC … this kind of balanced, fascinating series is exactly what we pay you for.Read full review »
