“I connected with this podcast by accident as I was transitioning careers from long term public service middle management to front line hospital and on the search for old Podsocs (QUT, Trish Fronec) episodes somewhere in the recesses of my iPhone that was almost in phone years, as old as me. I had a bad case of imposter syndrome returning to the front line and in need of a confidence hit. Here I was, the face of a (very) experienced practitioner (aka oldish seen through eyes of someone youngish), but feeling very much like a newbie inside. Having an intimate familiarity with, and understanding of how complex systems work, the vagaries of human nature and dynamics of relationships and interpersonal issues from years of management, gave me a solid foundation for my new career. When it however, came to the question of what best practice looks like with respect to loss and grief, working with family and domestic violence survivors, aged care and working with children and families I had to go digging. Social Work Stories became my ‘car buddy’ on the way to and from work, ‘sleep buddy’ (mind you, I had to hit “unplayed” most times on those, and repeat), and sometimes mid-day walk buddy. Two something years into a new career that is rewarding in every way, this podcast continues to nourish and enrich my practice. Recommended dose: weekly, in conjunction with workplace supervision, peer to peer consultation and professional development. Thank you Mim, Lis and the team.”
