“This is one of my favorite podcasts. It was such a nice surprise to stumble upon a podcast focused on film soundtracks, as I never realized there were so many people who enjoyed listening to soundtracks like I do. And I normally don’t like the single-host podcast format, but Collins handles it well and has a voice that just seems made for it.
That said, there are a couple areas where I think it could be improved upon. The first is a lack of television soundtrack coverage. There is a lot of great TV scoring out there and I don’t think a single TV show soundtrack had been touched until this new season, but hopefully that’s changing as we’ve got Cobra Kai and The Queen’s Gambit covered early this season already.
The other issue I have is the constant bombardment of John Williams. I think it’s universally agreed he is probably the king of movie scoring, but it feels like nearly a third (if not more) of the episodes focus on Williams soundtracks. I see this has been a pretty consistent criticism of the podcast, then I saw the first 3 episodes of the new season would focus on Home Alone and just laughed and rolled my eyes. Here we go again. There must have been at least 4 or 5 times already where a Williams movie has gotten 3 entire episodes (sometimes more) for that single movie, and sometimes for multiple movies in the same trilogy, and now we start the new season off with another one. I know he’s great, but we haven’t even had a single episode dedicated to any of the great works by other legends such as James Horner or James Newton Howard (just to name a few), which seems baffling.
Collins does a great, in-depth, and interesting analysis of each soundtrack he covers. I would love to start seeing a little more variety in the composers he does that with instead of just doing John Williams every other episode.”
