“I have listened to dozens and dozens of true crime investigation podcasts & this one is without question the worst I have ever heard. In fact, it is so bad I’m really angry - on behalf of the family, who have been led a merry dance by the journalist, and of the bbc for producing this drivel, and of myself, for listening to it at all.
It may be that this case was mishandled by the police, but ultimately this podcast has uncovered little beyond speculation and hearsay. To ask a forensic psychologist, who had virtually no information to go on, whether Ewart committed suicide, is disingenuous & irresponsibly bad journalism & puts a professional scientist in an impossible position (which is clear from his answers). To frame certain things as “new leads” which are based on at best unfounded hearsay & at worst scurrilous gossip of cranks, is atrocious “journalism”.
At one point the journalist says to Innes Ewart’s mum he feels he failed the family. Firstly, to make this story about him & his need for affirmation, is disgraceful. Secondly, whatever the mother said, he has failed across the board, by raising hopes in the family & by making a podcast which follows the formulas of the genre to the point of pastiche but with absolutely no genuine revelations.
In short: utterly appalling.”
