“The discussion I had with my girlfriend after watching the episode was more interesting than this professional podcast. I cringed through an episode on my drive home from work and it was a super frustrating, not fun experience. Things that could make this podcast better (you = hosts):
-Add a spoiler warning at the beginning of each episode, and then don’t shy away from talking about the plot rather than beating around the bush. That way, listeners will have already seen the episode, and minutes of hyping up and shying away from plot twists won’t be necessary. More time to focus on analyzing.
-When you talk about scenes, give audiences a snapshot of what’s going on in the scene. Less “but what about that scene with Penance and Amalia?!” And more “In the beginning, we see Bonfire Annie take down a group of Beggar King workers. Once she scares them off, we discover that she’s not alone…” It brings listeners back to the scene, rather than forcing them to focus on remembering exactly what happened AND listen to you talk.
-Dig deeper. Get your reactions mostly out of the way before filming, and then focus on asking real questions. Instead of “was Penance high???” ask “When do you think we’ll see Penance’s serious side, and Amalia’s silly side? What traits make them such a good team? Why does Penance trust Amalia so fully? What’s the back story?”
-When you’re interviewing people, focus on them, not you. Instead of trying to have a quippy conversation with someone you barely know, ask them about themselves and their character. Think of what you already know about the character (we already know that Frank and Mary love each other, we saw it in their scene together), ask what you don’t know (why does Frank so badly want to be touched? Does it have to do with his sexuality?).
-Listen to other TV show review episodes (Jabba the Pod for Clone Wars is a great one) and see what they do that you love.
A note: I only listened to Episode 3, so my views here are based only on that episode.”
